Epson Joins Getty Images in Digitizing and Preserving Tens of Thousands of Historical Images at America’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities

Getty Images, in partnership with the Getty Family and Stand Together, established the Getty Images Photo Archive Grant for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) with a commitment to digitize up to 100,000 archival images from HBCUs. This initiative aims to preserve and share the visual history of HBCUs while ensuring institutions retain full copyright ownership.

As part of the program, Getty Images was tasked with finding resources to support HBCUs in digitizing, monetizing, and protecting their photographic archives, as well as sharing untold/rarely told historical events and stories globally. By partnering with Epson and leveraging the power of Epson's photo scanning technology, HBCUs were able to capture the best possible digital images from prints, transparencies and negatives in a wide variety of sizes and formats.
