Kodak and Epson Form US&C Alliance to Deliver Highly Automated Workflow Solutions for Epson’s New Seven Color Digital Label Press

Agreement extends Kodak presence in the label printing market

CHICAGO, Sept. 9—Kodak’s Graphic Communications Group (GCG) and Epson America, Inc., announce a new alliance that makes the KODAK PRINERGY POWERPACK Workflow System available as a complementary solution for Epson’s new digital label press. Digital production of labels for cartons, bags, bottles, and other packaging materials will be enhanced with KODAK PRINERGY POWERPACK Software, which automates file processing, color management, imposition, and submission of JDF based information to the Epson digital label press.

“With the increasing adoption of digital printing within the packaging market, now more than ever customers need Web enabled, highly automated workflow solutions that allow them to move seamlessly between conventional and digital printing processes,” noted Steve Miller, Product Manager, Packaging Workflow, GCG. “This alliance with Epson makes some of the industry’s most powerful workflow solutions available to a much broader range of users and combines proven KODAK PRINERGY System technology with Epson’s new digital label press.”

The system is being shown for the first time in North America at Labelexpo Americas, Sept. 9-11 in Chicago (Epson booth #6523). Workflow demonstrations will feature the KODAK PRINERGY POWERPACK Workflow System, KODAK COLORFLOW Software, and KODAK INSITE Storefront System. The PRINERGY POWERPACK System is an open, end to end PDF workflow that will provide a comprehensive workflow solution for the Epson digital label press. The PRINERGY POWERPACK System brings a powerful set of features to the label market, including automated file processing using KODAK PRINERGY Rules-Based Automation Software, dynamic step and repeat layout creation using the PRINERGY System’s Packaging Layout Automation feature, an integrated KODAK PANDORA Step-and-Repeat Software, and enhanced color management capabilities. Tying this workflow functionality to the Epson digital label press will bring together a total digital printing solution for label converters that will allow them to automate production and capitalize on the incredible print quality that is achievable with the seven color Epson press.

Fully integrated with the KODAK PRINERGY POWERPACK Workflow System, KODAK COLORFLOW Software provides integrated color control throughout the production environment, allowing label converters to achieve a reliable color match from the original electronic file all the way through the production process to the final output on both digital and conventional presses. The KODAK INSITE Storefront System offers support for online ordering, with catalogs that enable customers to order a full range of tags, labels, and other print products.

“Like Kodak, Epson has a long history of technical innovation and leadership, and we are excited about working together to deliver a complete digital printing solution that will optimize workflow, increase productivity, and reduce costs for the short run label market,” said Anna Jen, Director, New Business Development, Commercial and Industrial Ink Jets, Epson America, Inc.

At the core of the new seven color Epson digital label press is its acclaimed MicroPiezo inkjet printing technology for delivering smooth gradations and incredible color quality. Combined with a new industrial quality, water based pigment ink set, this innovative press prints on standard, off the shelf roll substrates from 4” to 13” wide with no treatment or top coating required. A complement to conventional printing, the Epson digital label press enables converters to expand their service offerings and enhance their productivity.

Kodak will provide Epson with sales support in campaigns where workflow components are included with the sale of a digital press, and also will provide all service and support for workflow components sold with a press, including installation, training, and 12 months remote support. Kodak and Epson will work together on development, comarketing and promotional activities.
